Painting Oak Cabinets – Yay or Nay?

When I talk about painting cabinets with real estate agents or home owners I frequently get quite passionate responses that painting perfectly good wood is criminal.

Or that painting oak cabinets can’t be done well.

Or that the finish isn’t durable.

I disagree on all counts and over and over help home owners remodel their homes successfully without new cabinets being installed.  This recent remodeling job is a perfect example.  A high end Corvallis Oregon home was for sale and received negative reviews – it felt dated.  Everything in the home had been updated beautifully except the kitchen and master bathroom where a whole lot of oak cabinetry was not perceived as worthy of a top dollar offer.

With new paint the kitchen became timeless – a white kitchen is one that can be enjoyed for years and years without feeling trendy.  The painting was done by a professional painter who prepped properly, primed and sanded so the oak grain through the wood was minimal.

The results?  The home sold quickly when it went back on the market and for top dollar and the new owners have a beautiful and classic kitchen which will look beautiful for years to come.
